What does a sewer cleanout look like?

Walk the strip within a few feet of that wall, moving mulch, groundcover, and leaf litter aside.
3. Extend along the likely route
Continue in the drain's heading toward the street, alley, or septic tank, scanning a corridor rather than a line.
4. Check the property line
Some systems place an access point near the boundary, so include the strip between sidewalk and curb.
5. Pull whatever records exist
Plumbing and site plans, sewer connection permits, inspection reports, and past repair invoices often show it.
6. Ask who has been in the pipe
A plumber or drain company that has serviced the property usually knows where they gained access.
How to find a sewer cleanout in the yard
A yard cleanout is frequently just below the surface rather than proud of it. Landscaping raises grade over the years, sod grows across a cap, and a lid that was flush when installed ends up an inch or two under. Sweeping a foot across the grass along the probable route often finds a cap invisible from standing height, and a rigid probe pushed gently into soft ground meets a hard flat resistance where a lid sits.
Keep probing gentle, shallow, and inside the corridor you have reason to believe the drain follows. Start with the exit point, add whatever records exist, and establish the connection point at the far end — a main, a manhole, or a septic tank. That produces a probable corridor: enough to plan around, not enough to excavate from. No — that is not what the one-call process does. A notification brings participating facility operators out to mark the facilities they own or operate ahead of excavation. Nobody responding to a ticket is looking for your cap.
Whether the sewer line itself gets marked depends on ownership and local rules. Virginia 811 treats the cleanout as the point of consumption and states the line connecting the house to the main there will not be marked.
