PVC, irrigation, and sprinkler line considerations
PVC and polyethylene do not carry an EM signal unless an associated tracer wire or inserted conductor is available. GPR utility locating may detect the pipe, contents, void, or disturbed trench when contrast and ground conditions are favorable, but a small plastic line can remain indistinguishable.
Irrigation and sprinkler piping belongs within the water-line scope rather than a separate landing page. Manifolds, valve boxes, heads, zone layout, controller records, and owner knowledge can narrow the search. Leak detection is a different diagnostic objective and should not be assumed to be included in line locating.
Depth, identification, and cost limitations
Depth estimates depend on the selected method, signal quality, ground properties, target geometry, and instrument setup. A traced conductor can diverge from the pipe, and a radar response may indicate an anomaly without proving it is the water line. Non-detection does not establish that an area is clear.

Can a locator find a PVC water line without tracer wire?
Sometimes GPR or other site evidence can support the search, but success is not guaranteed. Pipe size, depth, contents, soil conductivity, moisture, and installation trench contrast all matter.
Is water-line locating the same as leak detection?
No. Locating establishes an interpreted route or position. Leak detection investigates whether and where water is escaping. Some providers offer both, but the proposal should state each service separately.
