Electromagnetic Utility Locating Services
Electromagnetic utility locating uses a receiver to follow an electromagnetic field associated with a conductive pipe, cable, or tracer wire. A provider may apply a signal by direct connection or induction, or search for passive power and radio signals already present. EM locating can efficiently trace suitable utilities, but signal coupling, broken tracer wires, poor access, nearby conductors, and nonconductive materials can produce incomplete or ambiguous results.
Direct connection, induction, and passive locating
The operator selects a signal method based on access, utility construction, congestion, and the investigation goal. A direct connection generally offers the most controlled active signal when a safe, appropriate connection point is available. Induction applies a signal without a metal-to-metal connection, while passive modes listen for fields already present.

A transmitter is connected to an accessible conductive component and a return path is established according to equipment and site procedures.
Induction clamp
A clamp can place a signal on an accessible cable or pipe without a direct electrical connection to the conductor.
Surface induction

Passive search

Conductive utilities and tracer wires
Continuously conductive metal pipes, cable sheaths, energized cables, and intact tracer wires are common EM targets. A nonmetallic water or gas line may be traceable when a properly installed and accessible tracer wire follows the route, but the signal follows the conductor—not the plastic pipe itself.
Accessible sondes or conductive push rods can sometimes be inserted into suitable pipes or conduits. That approach traces the transmitter or inserted conductor and depends on safe access, pipe condition, bends, and the provider's equipment.
When to combine EM locating with GPR
EM is strongest when a specific conductor can be energized and followed. GPR utility locating investigates subsurface contrasts and can add evidence for untraceable, nonmetallic, unknown, or abandoned features when ground conditions allow. Using both can help distinguish a traceable utility from other subsurface responses.

Signal and depth limitations
An EM signal can bleed onto adjacent conductors, jump through shared bonds, weaken across insulated joints, or stop at a broken tracer wire. Congested corridors, fences, reinforcement, overhead lines, and poor grounding can complicate a trace. Estimated depth depends on a clean signal and correct setup; it should not be treated as a universal accuracy guarantee.
