Concrete Scanning Services
Concrete scanning uses nondestructive instruments—commonly high-frequency ground-penetrating radar—to investigate rebar, post-tension cables, conduits, and other embedded features before drilling, coring, or saw cutting. The provider interprets reflected signals and marks or documents likely alignments and depths. Scan results depend on slab thickness, reinforcement congestion, target orientation, access, moisture, and the requested clearance area.
What concrete scanning can detect
Concrete creates a different GPR environment from soil. A high-frequency antenna is moved across an accessible surface in closely spaced passes. Reflections and repeating patterns can indicate reinforcement and embedded items, but material identity is interpreted from geometry, continuity, construction context, and other evidence rather than automatically labeled by the instrument.

Scanning before coring, drilling, or saw cutting
A useful pre-penetration scope defines the proposed core, anchor, trench, or cut plus enough surrounding area to interpret crossing features. The scanner needs physical access to the surface and room to move beyond the exact penetration point. Paint, tape, digital images, or a report may be used to communicate findings.
Concrete scanning informs planning but does not replace structural review, electrical safety procedures, permits, or the contractor's responsibility for the work. If reinforcement is the primary concern, the narrower rebar locating service may better match the request.

GPR concrete scanning vs. concrete X-ray
GPR and radiographic concrete X-ray are different technologies. GPR transmits radio-frequency energy and interprets reflections, usually from one accessible side. Concrete X-ray uses ionizing radiation and a detector to form a radiograph, commonly requiring controlled access and placement on opposite sides of the concrete.

Depth, congestion, and clearance limitations
There is no universal concrete scanning depth or clearance accuracy. Dense reinforcement, wire mesh, closely spaced layers, moisture, conductive material, slab thickness, target orientation, surface coatings, and limited scan area can mask or merge responses. Features below a strong metallic layer may be difficult or impossible to resolve.
Cost is normally shaped by the number and size of scan areas, access, hours, travel, congestion, marking needs, and reporting—not a single national rate. Ask for a scope-based quote and how inconclusive areas will be handled.
